Between the train station and the pedestrian zone (each about a 5-minute walk) you will find the Spezial brewery. In the old, cozy brewery inn you sit directly at the source of our well-known smoked beer specialties. Our kitchen also offers you down-to-earth Franconian home cooking. We have been brewing the famous “Bamberger Rauchbier” here on the former Steinweg (an old, once important trade route) for almost 500 years. We produce the smoked malt required for this in our own malthouse using a centuries-old process.

Our hotel

Stay overnight in the heart of the city: we have 15 cozy rooms available for our guests. Equipped with shower/WC, TV and free WiFi. These rooms are on the first and second floors of the listed inn, so there is no elevator available. In the morning you can fortify yourself with the rich breakfast buffet for exploring Bamberg and our region.

Our beer

Lager beer, amber-colored, mild and fine smoky aroma, 12.2% Original wort Märzenbier, dark, malty aromatic with a strong smoky taste: 13.5% Original wort “Unspundet Hell” hop-tart, unspiked, cloudy with yeast: 12.5% Original wort Bockbier traditionally at Christmas time: a dark, drinkable strong beer with approx. 17 % original wort wheat beer: fruity, tangy, top-fermented and matured in the bottle

Special smoked beer has been brewed in the brewery since 1536. Our brewing specialties owe their unique taste primarily to the drying of the brewing malt over an open beech wood fire. Soaking, germinating, kilning, grinding - the preparation of the brewing malt, the basis of which is organic barley from the Bamberg region, we do all of this ourselves. We have been cultivating this craftsmanship for many generations

Looking ahead: The exciting journey of our brewery inn

Our family-run brewery inn Spezial in Bamberg was first mentioned in a document in 1536. The well-known “Bamberger Rauchbier” has been brewed there since then. The brewery with its restaurant and hotel has been owned by the Merz family since 1898. In our traditional company - now in the fourth generation - we produce a total output of around 6000 hl/year. The kitchen and hotel are the domain of Manuela Merz and Christian Merz and his two sons help out in the brewery
